Designing Beyond Trends: Honoring Stories Through Interior Spaces

In both life and design, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: do we follow the crowd or dare to create our unique path?

As an interior designer, I’ve come to understand that true success in this field isn’t about following trends or showcasing my preferences. It’s about listening—really listening—to the people who will live in the spaces we help shape. Design, at its best, is a collaborative act of empathy.

I remember a particular client who came to me with a vision that was completely different from my usual style. She wanted every one of her five bedrooms painted in a different color, each with minimal furniture and a very personalized vibe. My signature style leans toward serene white walls, bold artwork, and carefully selected statement furniture. At first, I hesitated. Would this project even align with my portfolio? Would it reflect my aesthetic as a designer?

But instead of resisting her vision, I chose to open up a conversation. I created walk-throughs that showed both her idea and my perspective, and we discussed each room in depth. What unfolded was a rich, collaborative process that led to a home deeply reflective of her personality, lifestyle, and values. That project reminded me of a powerful truth: design isn't about me—it's about the people who live in the space.

At Indigo and Oak Design, this philosophy sits at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every home should be an authentic expression of the people inside it. Whether you lean toward minimalism, love maximalist color and texture, or find yourself somewhere in between, your space should feel like you.

My design journey is rooted in a dual identity. I grew up in South India, where simplicity is not only a way of life but a cultural grounding. It’s common to sit cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by minimal furniture, and still feel completely at home. That simplicity continues to influence how I see design, but so does my understanding of functionality, warmth, and visual storytelling. A space can be both uncluttered and expressive, serene and vibrant, humble and luxurious.

So, whether you're dreaming of a layered, art-filled living room or a calming, pared-down bedroom, I'm here to co-create a space that reflects your story—your values, your roots, and your aspirations.

If you’re ready to design a home that feels like you, I’d love to hear your story.
